I have tried Endnote and other reference managers in the past but found the process of searching online and importing metadata to be cumbersome. With so many books, I had to develop a method to keep track of all of them. But over the years I’ve fallen victim to the “I-don’t-have-this-book” syndrome, only to return home later and find it tucked away in the corner somewhere. I personally enjoy spending countless hours mining used bookstores for new titles. Īs a graduate student you’ll have plenty of books to read some you’ll buy, others you’ll borrow. You can find him on Twitter at or at his blog AfricanaArch. Just depends on which tradeoff we end up wanting to make.Justin Dunnavant is a PhD student in Anthropology at the University of Florida. This one’s still a finalist, too, despite the limitations for my particular case, if only because it seems pleasant and that counts for something. In general, I think it’s important to have a lot of people literate with software like Tap Forms and its predecessors. I see there are some scripts that might help with book scanning into Tap Forms. This is something we might use to build a db if we can’t find one. Have you or anyone else had any success hacking a relational model into it? It’s just a sqlite db under the hood, right? I don’t know if I would trust the summary and comments fields, or the custom fields, to store a lot of data (would rather have individual structured entries that are easier to manage), but there’s more going on here than I realized. You also might look at the custom fields that are part of the extras in a Bookpedia database.Īh, I see that now (changing the scope of the search fields.) That’s important. Summary fields are most certainly NOT single line only and are fully searchable. Perhaps we can get a table going like the email provider thread, since we’ve only had some small scattered threads about this topic in the past. I’d love to hear any recommendations or advice to reconsider the above.
